Beaches
Close by Demarest Lloyd State Park is located at the mouth of the Slocum River within a reasonable kayak paddle and is a short drive or bike ride from the Slocum’s Edge. The beach boasts gentle surf and is very children friendly. Horseneck State Beach is a six hundred acre beach and camping area within a fifteen minute back road drive from the Slocum’s Edge. Horseneck is famous for its dunes and surf (daily fee).
Kayaking and Canoeing
The Slocum River is an ideal location for exploring and site seeing with a kayak or canoe. The Lloyd Environmental Center is within a short paddle from the Slocum’s Edge and offers guided moonlit tours of the river over the course of the summer months.
Hiking
30 miles of scenic walking trails, maintained by DNRT (Dartmouth Natural Resource Trust), are a short distance from the cottage.
Biking
The country back roads that surround the Slocum Edge are ideal for biking and day trips. Beautiful Round Hill beach and the yachting village of Padanaram are perfect destinations for a short bike ride. Bike rental arrangements are available upon request.
Fishing
The Slocum River is a great spot to chase the seasonal runs of Stripe Bass or Bluefish right off of your Kayak or canoe. Fishing guides are available and fly fishermen are often seen working the river from early spring through late fall.
Day Tripping: Close by points of interest and play
- Ferry rides to Martha’s Vineyard and Cuttyhunk Islands from the New Bedford waterfront
- Lloyd Center for the Environment (located right on the Slocum River)
- New Bedford Whaling Museum and the New Bedford Historic National Park
- Westport Winery and Brewery tours.
